A local family is offering and opportunity for employment 5 afternoon hours on Saturdays and/or Sundays to work with and build bridges for a satisfying life, for a bright verbal 41 year old man with many interests (AMC adventures, organic/biodynamic farming, volunteering, art, rock music, TV, sports, movies, poultry, his pug Zambi, family, machinery, winter sports, canoeing, fishing) living independently in his own home, "Zambi's Farm" in Naples Maine.
He struggles with and prevails over many (but not all) inherent challenges of Down Syndrome and some anxieties generated by a history of that era's prevalent exclusive practices with its devaluing and the destabilizing cultural attitudes of rejection, and some family trauma.
The job would include some collaboration with those already supporting him other days of the week.
Work would involve entering into a relationship of supportive/affirming fellowship, mentoring-style education related to his own still growing capacities and the coaching of a variety of skills including use of the computer (he currently pays bills on line) and a variety of life-skills such as processing daily news and incoming mail, the use of garden machinery and home maintenance, cooperative support in areas of interest and connectivity to the larger community, especially the latter.
Interest in another's unique expression of human-beingness would make the job more interesting and rewarding.
Helpful qualifications would include a flexible inventive personality, a sense of humor, areas of passionate interest of your own, a genuine enjoyment of the human connections in life, pleasure in growing capacities, and natural empathy.
Essential requirement: a reliable car/truck and insurance.
Work would be compensated by Bridges of Maine.
