Maine Campus Compact (MCC) is a statewide coalition of colleges and universities whose purpose is to further the public purposes and civic mission of higher education. MCC's team of 8 VISTAs will all develop or coordinate programming that mobilizes college students to increase college aspirations in Maine's low-icome at-risk K-12 youth.
The University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) is one of 7 state universities in the UMaine System. UMA is a commuter campus, with a majority of the student body being comprised of non-traditional students (older than traditional students, with families and jobs, etc.). Many of UMA’s students come from disadvantaged backgrounds themselves, and have overcome obstacles in order to attend college. The VISTA member will use multiple creative methods to recruit at least 30 local teens to participate in the College Access Initiative. Developing and maintaining relationships with local high schools will be essential. The VISTA member will manage logistical issues related to program access, including transportation and flexible programming. Additionally, collaboration with faculty and UMA staff will be needed to develop meaningful college experiences for at-risk youth, both inside and outside the classroom.
The position will require developing compelling reflection exercises to challenge teens regarding learning experiences, both academic and personal. The position calls for administering surveys and tracking data, and hosting a celebration event at the end of the academic year.
