Saint Joseph's College will offer a Water Safety Instructor Course in June to train instructor candidates to teach courses in American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety programs. The course will develop an understanding of how to use class materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress. The 4-day course runs on June 18, 19, 25 and 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and participants must attend all classes.
To qualify for the course, candidates must be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of the course and demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills with Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4: front crawl, 25 yards; back crawl, 25 yards, breast stroke, 25 yards; elementary backstroke, 25 yards; sidestroke, 25 yards; butterfly, 25 yards. In addition, participants must be able to maintain a position on their back for 1 minute in deep water (by floating or sculling) and able to tread water for 1 minute.
