The newly established World Affairs Council of the Lakes Region, sponsored by the college, will present a program on climate change called "Global Warming: Paths to a Solution" on Monday, Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
The program will show a short documentary about Arctic climate change and policy options to address melting glaciers, followed by two speakers.
Guest speaker Landis Hudson, executive director of Maine Rivers, will talk about the experience of cleaning up rivers in Maine, which was initiated by the Clean Water Act. She holds a graduate degree in forestry resources management from the State University of New York and an undergraduate degree from Oberlin College. She has worked for Maine Audubon, the Natural Resources Council of Maine, Earthwatch Institute and the United Nations. After living and working in France, Ireland, Ecuador, Mexico and Canada, she now lives in Yarmouth, Maine.
Faculty speaker Greg Teegarden, an environmental science professor, will discuss two approaches to global warming solutions - cooperative international agreements and an approach involving individual nations, states and localities starting a groundswell of action, much as California did with air quality standards. Teegarden will talk about the challenges of both methods and what must be done for these approaches to work. Dr. Teegarden holds a master's degree from the University of Maine and a doctorate from the University of Rhode Island.
Discussion moderator Dr. Steve Aylward teaches in the Department of History and Political Science at Saint Joseph's. A former Army officer who specialized in foreign relations, he holds a master's degree in International Relations from North Carolina State University and a doctorate in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland. The free event will be held in Viola George Auditorium of Harold Alfond Hall and is open to the public. Discussion will follow the speakers and pizza will be served.
