Safety & Security Emergency Notification Emergency Procedures
|
Hazardous spill A hazardous spill may be defined as an uncontrolled release of a chemical or any biohazard substance. Any spillage of a hazardous chemical or other hazardous material MUST be reported to Campus Security at ext 7911. When reporting be specific about the nature of the involved material and exact location. Campus Security will notify the necessary specialized authorities and medical first responders. Vacate the affected area at once and seal it off to prevent further contamination of other areas until the arrival of emergency personnel. If an individual has experienced exposure to the skin, eyes or clothing, appropriate protocols must be followed immediately, e.g. access the eyewash station, remove chemically exposed clothing, and wash exposed skin areas with copious amounts of water. If an emergency exists, activate the building fire alarm. When the building evacuation alarm is sounded, an emergency exists. Walk quickly to the nearest marked exit and alert others to do the same. Do not use elevators in a building evacuation. Once outside, go to the building's evacuation rally point. An Incident Command Post may be set up near the emergency site. Keep clear of the Command Post unless you have official business. Do not return to an evacuated building unless an all-clear signal is given by authorized personnel.
