Saint Joseph's College of Maine

Lockdown

A lockdown response is used when it may be more dangerous to evacuate a building then to stay in place.

Events which could cause a campus wide lock down may include, but not be limited to, the following; an incident on the property of Saint Joseph's College involving a recent or ongoing event of violence, which poses a threat to the safety of the Saint Joseph's College community, and the perpetrator(s) is not identified and still at large; or an incident involving a recent or ongoing event of violence, off Saint Joseph's College property but in such close proximity that an unacceptable threat level exist for the Saint Joseph's College community due to the perpetrator(s) not being identified and still at large.

Once a campus lock down emergency has been announced via the college's Emergency Notification System (Connect - ED), it is the responsible of all building occupants to immediately begin to follow lock-down procedures.

The most important thing to do is stay calm, and do not ignore the emergency notification. If you are in a classroom, office or residence hall room, stay where you are and immediately lock the door or wedge/barricade it shut. Close windows and window treatments, lights, and stay away from window and doors. Do not use cell phones except to contact Saint Joseph 's College Campus Security if you have relevant information to pass along.

It is advisable to move to a location in the room on the same side as the door but at the opposite end so as to not be visible to anyone looking through the door. If a gunshot is heard, get down to the floor.

Students, faculty, staff and visitors in hallways or other open areas must proceed immediately to a classroom or office where they can safely shelter in place.

Students, faculty, staff and visitors on the first floor of the Alfond Center must proceed to the second floor and shelter in place in a classroom or office area.

No one should leave the security of a secured room until an all clear message has been received via the college's Emergency Notification System (Connect - ED).

If you find yourself in an outside environment, such as on the baseball or soccer field, seek protection in the nearest safe building to your location. Avoid any area where you observe Campus Security or police activity as this may be the area of most danger.

Residence Halls are locked at all times.  Administrative buildings begin being locked at 6:00pm except for the following:
