Saint Joseph's
College Emergency Medical Service was started in 1996 by a group of
students interested in providing students and staff with emergency
medical treatment during the hours when Health Services was not available.
Today Saint Joseph's EMS still functions primarily as a student run
club, overseen by Campus Security. In addition to responding to emergency
calls on campus, EMT's may also be requested to standby at special
events, such as Kid's Night Out and sporting events, where it is more
likely that they will be needed. EMT's are paid a small stipend for
each call they respond to, but primarily function as volunteers.
EMT's are on call Monday
through Friday from 4pm to 8am, as well as all day Saturday and Sunday
during the academic year. For medical assistance on campus during these
hours, call Ext. 7911 or Ext. 6687. When Campus Security receives a
medical call, the on call EMT is paged and a Security Officer licensed
as a First Responder by Maine EMS is dispatched to the scene to provide
first aid until the EMT arrives. Once on scene, the EMT and College
staff determines if emergency transport by Standish Rescue is needed.
Many times, the EMT can provide stabilizing care, allowing the student
to remain on campus, or be taken to the hospital by a friend, eliminating
the need for Standish Rescue to be called.
If you are an EMT or
are interested in becoming an EMT and joining Saint Joseph's EMS, call
Ext. 6687 and speak with Ian MacEachen, Associate Director of Security.
