The Call to Heal: Finding Meaning and Purpose in the Health Care Vocation
Featuring Sr. Callista Roy, PhD, RN, FAAN
July 19 - 26, 2009
The Call to Heal symposium is designed to reinforce the importance of spirituality, especially in the lives of ill individuals, caregivers and families. It will enable the student to explore models of care that promote and restore body, mind and spirit. In an eclectic way, it will complement other courses in the undergraduate and graduate curriculum by promoting a deeper understanding of the connections between spirituality and health.
Sister Callista Roy, internationally known nursing theorist and developer of the Roy Adaptation Model, will open the symposium on Sunday evening, July 19 at 7PM with a keynote address. She will discuss the notion of vocation from its Latin root meaning “calling” as well as her personal journey in nursing. A reception will follow Sister Callista's address. This speech is open to the public and 1 CEU is available for attending.
The one week course, co-led by Dr.'s Linda Rooney and Lois Hamel, continues with additional participation by Sister Callista on Monday & Tuesday and concludes with a spiritual retreat weekend on Sat. and Sun. 7/25 & 26. During the retreatthere will be guest holistic practitioners with whom students may explore various healing arts, such as Reiki, yoga and journaling. This course is available for 3 credits or 32 CEU's.
The presentation by Sister Callista will also serve as the program for the International Nursing Honor Society Kappa Zeta chapter.
