In the broadest sense, distance education is the delivery of educational
programs where the teacher and the student are separated geographically.
At Saint Joseph ’s College, you complete your course work
on your own schedule, within the overall program ’s time frame.
Each of our courses offered at a distance combines relevant course
content with a variety of assignments, readings, and typically group
projects. Faculty members are involved in every phase of the program,
from assignment development to analysis of student work, and are
available for one-to-one interaction with students.

You should be proficient with Email, Word Processing, Downloading
Files, Uploading Files, and Internet Browsing.

The faculty, administration, and staff of Saint Joseph ’s
College are devoted to providing a caring environment for the adult
military learner. An admissions counselor will guide you through
the application and enrollment process, and an academic advisor
will be your guide as you complete your program of study. Faculty
will work with you on a one-on-one tutorial basis. A unique tutoring
program to help students improve their writing skills is available
upon request and at no cost to the student. Other services include
access to our career services office, and 24/7 online access to
the library and a technology help desk.

Classes are delivered online using a Web-based course tool: ANGEL.
This Web site (requiring a Saint Joseph’s College-provided
UserID and password) allows students to access a variety of online
course components including the course syllabus, study guide, assignments,
lectures, discussion area topics for "threaded" asynchronous
discussions, and other resources that, with daily access and/or
postings, are considered "attending class." The asynchronous
nature of Saint Joseph’s College online courses allows eArmyU
students to study when their schedules permit – anytime, anywhere!

The length of time it takes to complete your program is dependent
on how many credits (courses) you need for graduation, and how
focused you are on your course work. You will have 15 weeks to
finish your course work.

Our Web-based course tool, ANGEL, contains features that permit
students to download most required course material, reducing their
reliance on continuous Internet access. Using this feature, eArmyU
students have successfully completed courses while deployed, in
several overseas locations, and even while in the field!

Absolutely! Saint Joseph’s College students apply a variety
of military and veteran’s tuition assistance benefits to the
cost of their studies, augmenting their eArmyU benefits. The College
is authorized to receive Federal and state veteran’s tuition
assistance funding. Some restrictions may apply, so be sure to check
with your education officer or an admissions counselor at Saint
Joseph’s College.

For any courses that have final exams, the exam is mailed to the
servicing Education Center where you completed the on-line portion
of the course. If you are deployed, arrangements can be made to
get the exam to you, wherever you are.

Only if you love lobster!! Participation in a one-or two-
week Summer Program is optional. You may, of course, attend
graduation ceremonies, if you choose to, but this is only an
option. We can advise you if you want to do this.
Though not required, we do strongly encourage and welcome your visit
to our beautiful lakeside campus in Maine if at all possible. Maine
in the summer is truly splendid, and our students find the Summer
Program one of the most rewarding and enjoyable aspects of their
education through Saint Joseph’s College. Please visit our
Summer
Programs page for more information, but remember that
some policies and information may not specifically apply to you
since you are leaving the Saint Joseph’s College eArmyU website.

Recognizing the obligation to serve the needs of non-traditional
adult learners in the U.S. and abroad, distance education was introduced
at Saint Joseph’s College in 1976. At that time, Saint Joseph’s
offered one degree program - the Bachelor of Science in Professional
Arts, a degree completion option available for individuals with
licensure or certification in one of the health professions, which
incidentally is one of the programs offered through eArmyU today.
Evidence of our commitment to distance education is also demonstrated
by the inclusion of a provision for offering “…to
multiple areas of the world, both degree and non-degree programs
through distance education” in our Mission Statement, and
by testimony given by our then President, Dr. David House, to
the U.S. Congress in 1996 about technology and distance learning,
and the importance of a support system and multiple levels of
personal contact.
After nearly three decades of distance learning academic excellence
and growth, Saint Joseph’s now offers more than 30 programs
of study available at a distance through its Division of Graduate
& Professional Studies (seven of our online programs are available
through eArmyU at this time). Approximately 3,400 students are
currently active in distance education through this division.
These students come from all 50 states and more than 20 countries,
and include service members in all of the Armed Services.

Successful distance learners find that it ’s important to
have clearly defined career and personal goals. In addition to setting
your goals, setting priorities is also critical; you need good time
management skills to juggle your job, your education, and your personal
life. Dedication and personal motivation will also help you succeed.
