Campus Anti-Virus Information
• The college campus' computer systems are protected by a software
package called Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition, which covers all of
our servers and administration desktop systems. These systems are scanned
on an ongoing basis using a feature called File System Real-time Protection.
Anti-virus scans can also be done manually and remotely by Information
Systems personnel.
• The software also scans every piece of e-mail that
flows through the college's e-mail system. Any e-mails that contain a
virus will be either cleaned or the offending part of the e-mail, i.e.
attachments, be put into a quarantine state. You may receive a message
that you have received a virus, read this message carefully. If it says
that the virus has been cleaned or quarantined, simply acknowledge the
message and continue using your computer. If you receive any other type

• Please note that effective this summer, the College
has installed a new program to ensure that student's have the current
anti-virus definitions before they'll be allowed on the network.
How to protect your computer
1. Install Norton Anti-Virus. This is a college standard and can be downloaded for free.
2. Keep your virus protection up to date
3. Schedule a weekly scan of your system
4. If you get an attachment in e-mail that you’re a little unsure
of, scan it with your virus protection program BEFORE attempting to open.
5. Set your virus protection program to automatically update, that way
you won’t forget to update it yourself
6. Scan files for viruses BEFORE downloading. This includes Mp3’s
and pictures.
7. Use common sense when surfing the internet…ALWAYS scan a file
before downloading it.
8. Be aware that all e-mail and attachments received/sent through the
SJC server are scanned by the Norton Anti-Virus program. This does not
extend beyond SJC e-mail functions.
9. Also be aware that no virus protection program is 100% accurate. Caution
is your best protocol.
