Scholarship reception honors students and donors

Each year the College recognizes excellent students and generous donors who make scholarship aid possible for those excellent students. The College’s annual Scholarship Recognition Reception this fall packed Xavier Hall Lounge with students, scholarship donors and parents, as 115 of Saint Joseph’s top students were honored for their hard work and academic performance.

Speakers publicly thanked donors for their investments in education.  Dr. David House talked about the importance of scholarships in the lives of Saint Joseph’s students, pointing out that nine out of 10 students require need-based financial aid to attend the College. “The scholarship gifts and grants, and the endowments created by donors, are critically important in the lives of our students and their families,” he said. “We could not be more thankful to our thoughtful and generous donors for providing the resources to make it possible for deserving and excellent students to attend Saint Josep ’s College,” he added.

Following the reception, students, donors, and families gathered on the lawn behind Xavier Hall to enjoy refreshments, take in the view of the lake and become better acquainted with each other.

New associate director of Annual Fund
joins staff

Heidi Gagnon has been named the associate director of the Annual Fund. She comes to Saint Joseph’s from Bates College, where she worked in the Alumni and Parent Programs Office.

Before moving to Maine two years ago, Heidi worked in the financial services industry in Massachusetts, while completing her B.S. at Salem State College.

Heidi’s goal is to help the Annual Fund grow: “Alumni, parents, staff, faculty, GPS students, friends...we all need to work together to show our support for the gem that is Saint Joseph’s College,” she says.

To talk about how you can get involved or to make your Annual Fund gift, please call Heidi at
(207) 893-7895 or e-mail hgagnon@sjcme.edu.

Or make online gifts at: www.sjcme.edu/gift.

Hidden scholarships: you and the Annual Fund

Did you know that every Saint Joseph’s student actually receives a hidden scholarship? Tuition alone does not cover the cost of educating a student, so each year contributions from alumni, parents, faculty, staff, GPS students and friends help to bridge this gap. These gifts support academic programs, athletic programs, the library – in fact, every aspect of the Saint Joseph’s experience is enhanced by Annual Fund gifts.

Please help make a difference in the life of a Saint Joseph’s student – consider making your gift to the Annual Fund today.

Contributions can be mailed to Saint Joseph’s College, Office of Institutional Advancement, 278 Whites Bridge Road, Standish, Maine 04084. Or, donate online at: www.sjcme.edu/gift or call us at (877) SJC-ALUM (752-2586).

College dedicates the McSween Wing

In December 1997, Andrew and Helen McSween announced the most extraordinary planned gift in the history of Saint Joseph’s – a charitable remainder trust totaling $2.1 million. To honor their gift, the College dedicated the Andrew and Helen McSween Memorial Wing of Alfond Hall on Sept. 24.

Besides the funds that helped to build Alfond Hall, the Trust provides four endowed scholarships for Saint Joseph’s students, along with endowed funds for Campus Ministry service outreach to the town of Standish, and funds for furthering Sponsorship and Mission Integration at the College.

At the time the gift was made, Andrew McSween said: “Well, God gave it to us. We never expected to have so much.”

Speaking at the dedication, President David House said: “How can I express the spirit of thankfulness that we all feel toward Andrew and Helen McSween? The enormity of their generosity and their great legacy to our students and college community will be felt by all of us for generations to come.”
