Jim Killoran ’80 and
the theology of the hammer

During the fall months, Jim Killoran ’80 has worked vigorously with a team of volunteers to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. As executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Westchester County, N.Y., he’s been active in building a home for Mary Lou and Andres Rivera, who moved back to Yonkers with their two children when their apartment in New Orleans was destroyed.

Killoran is also involved with “Operation Home Delivery,” a program created to build homes in New York and ship them to Katrina victims in the South. In late September, he helped to build homes at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City with other volunteers, a segment aired on the “Today Show.”

But even before Hurricane Katrina, Killoran was committed to the cause of Habitat, an organization he has devoted himself to for 18 years. And he doesn’t just talk the talk, he picks up the hammer.

Killoran believes the strength of a great college education is measured by involvement with service. And he dreams that if every church sponsored a Habitat home, we could end poverty in our lifetime.
