Scholarship reception recognizes
donors and students

A record attendance of more than 250
people gathered on campus in late September to celebrate the generosity
of scholarship donors and the achievements of student recipients. Donors
represented both established scholarship funds that have been in existence
for decades, as well as new scholarships that have just begun to touch
the lives of students at Saint Joseph’s
College.
While the weather for the afternoon event started out showery
and the reception was driven indoors, the sun began to stream through
the windows as a record 125 students were recognized for academic excellence
in front of their parents and the individuals whose gifts to the College
made the awards possible.
Attorney Dan M. Snow of the Portland law firm
Pierce Atwood, a longtime donor to the scholarship program and former
scholarship recipient during his college years, told the gathering how
the generosity of a past donor had helped him to succeed and to carry
on the legacy of giving – and how that initial gift made to his
college over a century ago was being multiplied through his own gifts
today. “When we try to serve others with our resources, our gift
is multiplied, sometimes in wholly unforeseen and magnificent ways,” he
said. He urged students to show gratitude to their benefactors by continuing
this practice of giving in the future: “And, perhaps, when you
do, your gift will be multiplied, in wholly unforeseen and magnificent
ways.”
Saint Joseph’s College provides scholarships from two kinds of
funds given by generous donors. Endowed scholarship funds generate annual
interest, part of which is used for scholarships in perpetuity. Annual
gifts – including the Corporate Alliance Program for Scholarships – provide
scholarships in the year that the gifts are given. In all, 61 endowed
and annual scholarships made possible 125 awards in 2006.
