Dr. Joe Lee, president of Saint Joseph's College of Maine

Dear Members of the Saint Joseph’s College Community,

The academic year is in full swing, and I am pleased to lead our institution as it completes its 95th year and continues a strong tradition of Catholic education and its Mercy mission. Labor Day weekend brought another class of more than 350 new students and a second year where enrollment passed the 1,000 mark. We have now reached 1,062 students on campus. Our Graduate & Professional Studies division remains strong, with all of its programs now offered online to adult students all over the country.

A college owes a great deal of its quality to faculty, and I am pleased to note that a number of professors have books in progress or about to be published, including Dr. Michael Connolly of our history department and Dr. Daniel Sheridan of our theology department. In the last several months, our faculty in environmental and marine science – Drs. Mark Green and Greg Teegarden – received great press coverage about their ongoing research. In addition, Dr. Nina Eduljee of the psychology department received the Faculty Fellowship Award for her research on predictors of college academic success. Art professor Scott Fuller was honored in California by the Beijing Olympic Landscape Sculpture Committee for his designation as a finalist in the competition.

In September nearly 400 alumni returned for Homecoming, including a beautiful day for the Alumni Golf Tournament and a record turnout for the Hall of Fame dinner, which inducted six new members.

Many of our fall athletes posted strong seasons, and the women’s cross country team was named the 2007 GNAC Champion. Three of those runners finished in the top ten and earned GNAC All-Conference honors. Coach Tom Dann was named Cross Country Coach of the Year and Ryan Prescott ’09 was named GNAC Runner of the Year.

There has been much press lately about “green” campuses. Under the leadership of Dr. Jeanne Gulnick, we have kicked off the Attainable Sustainable campaign and are working with students and staff to expand our stewardship ethic and find ways to both cut waste and save money.

As a prelude to Family Weekend in October, we celebrated our annual Scholarship Recognition Reception, which drew a record 275 attendees, including students, individual and corporate donors. Through the generosity of many, our scholarship program has grown to include nearly 70 named scholarships. Mercy Week was one of our best ever, featuring a talk by Sr. Michele Aronica ’74, and the unveiling of a wonderful theme for the academic year: “Small Steps, Great Strides – Walking With Integrity.” We are all working on integrating this core value throughout campus life.

When you receive this magazine, we will be entering the holiday season. As a Mercy institution, we emphasize giving and service to others, and I am pleased to note that a team of students and faculty led by theology professor Dr. Steven Bridge will be returning to serve in Guatemala over winter break. We wish them well and honor their spirit of giving.

Thank you all for your support of Saint Joseph’s College, our wonderful students, faculty, Sisters, and staff.

Joseph Lee, President
