Saint Joseph's College If you’re a graduate of Saint Joseph’s College in the health care field, you are a member of our largest single alumni constituency. A newly created Saint Joseph’s College Alumni Health Care Network will provide you with professional and/or personal connections to other Saint Joseph’s College alumni working in health care. The growth of this network will include: an online alumni community, online job board, educational opportunities/ CEUs, e-newsletter covering topics in health care, and an opportunity to be an advocate for Saint Joseph’s College, either from an admissions perspective or fostering business relationships between the College and your employer. Our first goal is to develop an extensive list of alumni in the health care field, so please take a moment to give us your contact information at www.sjcme.edu/ahn. Once you become a member of the network, we can keep you updated on activities. Please try to send your information by May 15, so that you don’t miss any news! We’re very excited about this new development, so please join us and become an active member of the network. Barbara M. Plungis ’87 JoAnn K. Mower ’78 |

The Monks baseball team took its annual trip to Tampa, Fla., for spring training – so why not bring the alumni along? Alumni and parents from all over the country met up in Tampa to support Will Sanborn ’86 and his 2006 team. Alumni made a long weekend out of the trip to enjoy a little R&R and fun in the sun. Activities included a happy hour at one of Tampa’s local hot spots, a Red Sox spring training game at McKechnie Field – the home field of the Pittsburgh Pirates, a day at the park for the Tampa Bay Invitational, and plenty of downtime to enjoy the sunshine!
Alumni from all over New England came to Portland to watch the Portland Pirates take on the Toronto Marlies in January. The crowd of 84 alumni and friends made their presence known as they cheered on the hometown team. The SJC crowd also enjoyed a pre-game reception at Rivalries, a local watering hole located near the Civic Center, to get fired up for the game.
More than 30 local alumni gathered at “the old stomping grounds” of Pat’s Pizza in Windham last fall for a night out with friends. Alumni had some laughs over pizza and beer while reminiscing about times at Saint Joseph’s (and of course, times at Pat’s!).
Members of the Saint Joseph’s Walton Street Society (graduates of the College from 50 years and more) and the Sisters of Mercy gathered in December at the original Saint Joseph’s College building location on Walton Street in Portland. The guests enjoyed refreshments while catching up with friends and classmates before joining Sister Mary George O’Toole ’51, Vice President for Sponsorship and Mission Integration, for a lecture on the life and times of Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. This was the inaugural program in the Walton Street Society program series, so stay tuned for future events!
The Board of Trustees is one of the most prestigious and important positions at a college, and 12 Saint Joseph’s College alumni now serve as Trustees. These engaged alumni, who have embraced getting involved during this period of dynamic growth, include five company presidents, a former health care company entrepreneur who is now a stay-at-home mom, and two hospital chief executive officers.
Board members are effectively the stewards of the College. They have a fiduciary responsibility along with a moral and ethical commitment to the College’s values and mission. Each Trustee serves on at least one committee: Academic Affairs, Student Life, Finance/Building & Grounds, Trustee Membership & Governance and Institutional Advancement. The Board holds four meetings a year during which they consider tuition and fees, operating budgets, tenure appointments and major expenditures. They also provide counsel to the President of the College and his senior staff. The distinguished alumni elected to the Board of Trustees in 2005 include:
Marcus J. Barresi ’76
President,
Barresi Financial, Inc.,
Presque Isle, Bangor, Auburn and Scarborough,
Maine
Claire Fraser Bowen ’70
President, Valley Regional Healthcare,

Joseph B. Gallagher ’83

Lee M. Kennedy ’87

Kenneth Marino ’82
President,

Jane Sheeran Smith ’83

John P. Tolan ’82

Pompano

As Saint Joseph’s has various needs arise, we call on trustees to offer their own expertise. For example, since joining the board this past summer, Lee M. Kennedy ’87, President of Lee Kennedy Company of Boston (a specialized construction firm with major projects throughout New England) has demonstrated the commitment members make when they agree to serve their alma mater.
After the initial board orientation in September, Kennedy was appointed to the Finance/Buildings & Grounds Committee based on his business ex-pertise. He immediately began to make an impact by helping the senior staff identify architectural firms who could update the College Master Plan. He served on the selection committee for that project, and in that capacity, made an extra trip to Saint Joseph’s for an all-day meeting.
In between, Kennedy attended the first alumni event in Boston, participated in three board meetings and introduced college officials to prominent Boston business figures to increase our exposure in major markets outside Maine. Lee Kennedy is just one example of our new alumni trustees who are proud to serve their alma mater in this capacity and who make a difference. Thank you to all of them.
