Alumni book lecture: “Finding Amy”
Last semester, Joe Loughlin ’75, Deputy Chief of the Portland
Police department, joined the College community for a discussion of his
best-selling book, Finding Amy. The book is a fascinating, first-hand
account of the murder investigation of Amy St. Laurent that shocked southern
Maine in the fall of 2001. Alumni, students, faculty and community members filled
the Viola George Auditorium to listen to Loughlin discuss the case and
the process of writing the book with co-author Kate Clark Flora. Joining
Loughlin was Diane Jenkins, Amy’s mother, who graciously shared
her personal thoughts and memories with the audience.
Runnin’ Monks put up strong showing in Hyannis marathon
A Saint Joseph’s College team comprised of students, staff and
alumni placed second out of 78 teams in the Hyannis Marathon in February!
Competing on the Runnin’ Monks I were alumnus Rick Garcia ’86,
cross country captains Sarah Willis ’08 and Matt Ferguson ’07,
and cross country coach Tom Dann. The Runnin’ Monks II and Sebago
Striders were the other SJC teams competing. The Runnin’ Monks
I finished behind the very strong Boston College team, but Ferguson
says he’ll be back for more: “This is what it’s all
about. I feel like in a way I’ve come full circle, and I look forward
to coming back next year as an alum and getting another crack at the
team from Boston.” Finishing respectively in 7th place, were the
Runnin’ Monks II, and in 23rd, the Sebago Striders.
Walton Street Society induction
The Saint Joseph’s Walton Street Society recognizes and honors
alumni who are celebrating their 50th anniversary from the College. Last
October, the Class of 1957 was inducted and joined over 100 other alumni
as members. The ceremony kicked off the campus-wide 50th celebration
of the Standish campus, and Walton Street members enjoyed a variety of
activities held throughout the day.
Holiday Magic in Portland
Merrill Auditorium was the perfect setting for alumni who attended the
annual Magic of Christmas tradition in Portland. Guests enjoyed a private
reception in the State of Maine room before taking in the songs of the
season with the Portland Symphony Orchestra and community choir.
SJC in America’s capital
Washington, D.C., area alumni came together during election week to
meet, greet and socialize at the Army and Navy Club. Traditional and
distance education alumni, as well as current distance education students,
had a great time meeting one another and discussing their Saint Joseph’s
experiences. Members of the alumni office and admissions office
were on hand to give a college update and discuss the new alumni-in-admissions
program.
Boston holiday party
Alumni and friends rang in the holidays at the Union Club in downtown
Boston. Over 35 guests gathered to socialize, share SJC memories, and
hear from President David House on the plans for Saint Joseph’s.
Members from all generations were represented and had a chance to meet
others who live and work in the Boston area.
Alumni basketball days
Coach Rob Sanicola ’99 and Coach Deb Reardon hosted hoops for
alumni. First, the male alumni played in November and took to the stands
to cheer on the men’s team as they beat UNE in a scrimmage. The
day ended with a reception for alumni, players and parents. In January,
the women alumnae came back to play and take in a women’s game
against Green Mountain College.
