The Feast of Saint Joseph

March 19, 2007

Dear Members of the Saint Joseph's College Community,

This semester marks the end of my 12th year as president of Saint Joseph's College. With the help of many people and with God's grace, it has been my honor and privilege to be able to provide leadership to Saint Joseph's College throughout these years of dramatic challenges and ultimate successes.

When I first visited Saint Joseph's College as a candidate for president in April of 1995, I was impressed with the enormous potential and many outstanding qualities that make this College so special, most notably the great charism of the Sisters of Mercy. Now, 12 years later, I believe that I have accomplished what I set out to do, namely to raise Saint Joseph's College to a new level of excellence as a Catholic college in the Mercy tradition.

After much prayer and reflection, I have decided to resign as president of Saint Joseph's College, effective May 15, 2007. The College is doing extraordinarily well with high morale, excellent faculty and students, strong admissions, an outstanding master plan that will continue to transform the face of our beautiful campus, and a real sense of destiny. The time is right for a new leader to step in and continue to help Saint Joseph's College fulfill this destiny. The next president will inherit an enviable tradition of nearly 100 years of growth and success, and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to be part of this tradition.

I could never have been effective as president without the help of many exceptional people - faculty, students, staff, alumni, board members, donors, friends, our Bishop, and especially the Sisters of Mercy. I owe a special debt of gratitude to my wife and daughter, whose love and support have been so essential to me. Please let me take this opportunity to thank everyone who has provided me guidance, friendship and support throughout these years. I ask for your support now to help effect a smooth transition, paving the way for the next president and the beginning of a new era in the life of Saint Joseph's College.

Saint Joseph's College continues to have enormous potential and will always retain a very special place in my heart. Thank you for allowing me to share in the life of this great college.

Sincerely,
David B. House, Ph.D.
President
