Judy Tarr ’99
Running a hospital and long-term care facility

As President and CEO of Miles Memorial Hospital in coastal Damariscotta,
Judy Tarr ’99 oversees every aspect of its operation and its nearby
long-term care division. It’s a challenging job that requires constant
attention, both to details of the business and to satisfaction of the
patients and staff.
Thirteen years ago, her promotion to CEO at Miles
Memorial came with a caveat: a master’s degree was required. Tarr
searched a still-fledgling Internet to find a distance education program
that would fit with her family life and her demanding job.
“The
Saint Joseph’s program … was great because most of the
work could be done off-site and I liked the fact that it was nearby,” she
says. She found her course work in the health services administration program
was stimulating yet practical. It allowed her to apply principles she learned
in class to solve problems in the hospital. In addition to off-campus studies,
she attended two summer session residencies and still keeps in touch with some
of those classmates.
Now she’s training with Saint Joseph’s to become
an online instructor for its health services administration program and writing
the curriculum
for the course she’ll be teaching.
When she’s away from the
hospital, Tarr immerses herself in her “first
love” – oil painting. She also volunteers for the Round Top
Center for the Arts and as a driver for Mobius, a social service agency
serving people with developmental disabilities. Tarr also enjoys scuba
diving with her husband in exotic locations like Bonaire and the Grand
Cayman Islands.
