The Royal Blue Club

A royal way to support Saint Joseph’s College

Scott Vachon '09

It wasn’t a surprise that Scotty Vachon ’09, the son of Dana and Francois Vachon, chose to attend Saint Joseph’s College and play basketball. Both his mother, Dana Vachon ’77, and his father Francois had great experiences on campus in the mid-’70s. Dana was a three-sport athlete (soccer, basketball, softball) and strongly believed in a small liberal arts
atmosphere that fostered the concept of “student-athlete.”

What was a surprise, however, was that Elbie Murphy ’09, Scotty’s longtime high school basketball opponent and prep school teammate at Albany Academy in New York’s Capital District, would continue his basketball career at Saint Joseph’s College.

Dana was thrilled that Scotty and Elbie play
basketball as Monks. “Saint Joe’s athletics was a great way for me to find myself and reach my potential, and I was excited about what the experience could do for both Scotty and Elbie.”

Dana answered questions and related her experience with Elbie and his family. She talked about all of the positive aspects of being involved in athletics at St. Joe’s. For Elbie and his parents, it was comforting and reassuring to know the faith and confidence the Vachons had in St. Joe’s.
“Both parents went to St. Joe’s and they were sending their son, so I trusted their advice and recommendation,” says Elbie. “I’m really glad I chose to come to SJC, because the students, faculty, staff and coaches are amazing.”

Scotty and Elbie are best friends. They’re in the weight room working out together. They’re guarding each other at practice and pushing each other to the limit. They’re eating together in the dining hall and studying together in the library. As they both enter their sophomore year, Coach Sanicola has high expectations for both players: “I expect Scotty and Elbie to make a big impact this year,” he says.

The Vachons come to Maine for every home game. As active community leaders in the local schools and AAU basketball, they know that there is a lot of untapped opportunity for Capital District students looking for colleges like Saint Joseph’s. They plan to support the Royal Blue Club by letting student-athletes in their area know about the College.
