Maine Suzuki Association performs benefit concert for Seeds of Peace
On Sunday, June 23, 140 students from the Maine Suzuki Association and the New England Suzuki Institute, ages three to 18, will perform a benefit concert at Saint Joseph’s College to raise funds for Seeds of Peace, an international nonprofit that brings together youth from conflict-torn countries to instill in them a desire for peace and to build leadership skills. The musicians will perform on violins, cellos, guitars and pianos.
Book donation to Riverton Elementary continues three-year collaboration with Saint Joseph’s College
On Tuesday, May 21, faculty and staff from Saint Joseph’s College visited Riverton Elementary School in Portland to present Assistant Principal David Turner and teacher Teddy Valencia with picture books from the Picture-Perfect Science series. Tuesday’s donation is the latest collaboration between the two schools.
Symposium for educators addresses teaching students on the autism spectrum
From July 8 to 12, Saint Joseph’s College is holding a symposium to explore issues, themes and strategies for teaching students of all ages on the autism spectrum. The symposium will focus particularly on the high end of the spectrum (Asperger’s). The symposium is a great opportunity for teachers, administrators, special education personnel and others who work with students on the autism spectrum.

Alumnus, honorary degree recipient donates materials and workers to rebuild Breezy Point firehouse
Jim Killoran, a 1980 history and sociology graduate of Saint Joseph’s College and the executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Westchester, N.Y., has pledged to donate materials and manpower to rebuild a Breezy Point, N.Y., firehouse that was damaged during Hurricane Sandy.
Third annual Monks 5K runs on a beautiful May day
On Thursday, May 2, 50 members of the Saint Joseph’s College community met behind the Harold Alfond Center to participate in the third annual Monks 5K. It was a clear, blue day, with Sebago Lake and Mount Washington visible from the starting line.
Continuing education workshop for CPAs
The CPA Series at Saint Joseph’s College will hold a one-day workshop for certified public accountants and other financial professionals on Thursday, May 16. The workshop provides eight hours of continuing education credits toward licensing requirements in addition to one hour of ethics.
Maine Space Grant Consortium scholarships support students’ research
Saint Joseph’s students Terence Cullen ’14 and Robert Michaud Jr. ’14 have each been awarded a $3,000 scholarship through the Maine Space Grant Consortium to pursue research of interest to NASA. Submitted to a panel of Saint Joseph’s professors – Dr. Elizabeth Auger, Dr. Nicholas Benfaremo, Dr. Johan Erikson and Camilla Fecteau – the students’ research proposals look at topics that, after successful execution in the laboratory, can be applied in different settings of space exploration.
