Patsy Thompson Leavitt of Buxton has been chosen Volunteer of the Year by the Portland chapter of Altrusa International. An assistant professor of nursing at Saint Joseph's College, Leavitt started a free health care clinic for people without health insurance that has served nearly 1,000 patients since 2004. The Leavitt's Mill Health Center, originally located in Buxton, recently moved to larger quarters in Bar Mills in order to expand its services and reach more people.

Altrusa International operates worldwide as a community-based organization that seeks to "solve the problems in our backyards." Altrusa volunteers raises money for local charities, help at battered women's shelters, care for runaway teens, build houses for Habitat for Humanity, fights AIDS and encourage literacy.
