February 3, 2006 Contact: Charmaine Daniels at (207) 893-7723 or e-mail cdaniels@sjcme.edu Saint Joseph’s College hosts dinner to preview baseball season As the Saint Joseph’s College baseball team prepares to defend its North Atlantic Conference Championship, the Monks are hosting an on-campus afternoon of inspiration, fine dining and conversation at its 2nd Annual Hot Stove Dinner on Saturday, March 4. The gathering features guest speaker Travis Roy, a buffet hosted by Bon Appetit and a Monks baseball season preview. Roy is a former Boston University hockey player and author of “Eleven Seconds,” which details his against-all-odds journey after a paralyzing injury just seconds into his first collegiate hockey game. Looking ahead to the Monks baseball season, the team returns several top pitchers including lefties Charlie Furbush (7-1, 1.75 ERA, .392, 32 RBIs), Ben Cutter (3-1, 4.23 ERA), and Steve Stout (5-0, 4.13 ERA) and right-handers Steve Lambert (3-1, 3.38) and Miles Johnson ( 3-0, 1.62). Key offensive returnees include Charlie Furbush (.392, 32 RBIs), Mark Clapp (.320, 29 RBIs), Brian Schools (.314, 30 runs) and Ben Muniz (.333). The Monks begin their season in Tampa, Fla., with a doubleheader vs. University of Rochester on March 12. The team will play nine games in Florida and return to the Northeast on March 18. On March 25 and 26, the team will travel to Maryland to play Endicott College at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md. Purdue Stadium is the home of the Delmarva Shorebirds, Single A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Former Saint Joseph’s College outfielder Nick Mirabello is the marketing and promotions director for the Shorebirds. The Hot Stove Dinner begins with Roy’s talk at 2 p.m. in the college dining hall.
