New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch announced late today that J. Bonnie Newman of North Hampton, N.H., is his choice to fill the U.S. Senate seat of Judd Gregg, a Republican who today was nominated by President Obama to be Secretary of Commerce. Newman, a 1967 graduate of Saint Joseph's College who is Gregg's former chief of staff, will serve for the remaining two years in his term. Lynch, a Democrat, said Newman has agreed not to run for re-election in 2010.

She also previously served as executive dean of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

She earned her B.A. in sociology from Saint Joseph's College and a M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from The Pennsylvania State University. She received an honorary degree from Saint Joseph's in 1990 and gave the commencement address that year and in 2002.
