Lizotte wins award, volunteers in Haiti

Renee Lizotte of Rumford, a senior at Saint Joseph's College of Maine, has been named an Outstanding Physical Education Major by the Maine Association for Health, Physical Education, Dance and Recreation. Just one of two physical education students selected in Maine, she will represent the state at the Eastern District Convention in Vermont.

Lizotte was also part of a Saint Joseph's team of students and staff that traveled to Haiti for a week in January to help build housing for families living in makeshift lean-tos. A grant from the Dugas Foundation covered construction costs, but team members had to pay their own transportation and lodging costs.

While in Haiti, the team worked side by side with Haitian construction workers to mix mortar, lay bricks and make cinderblocks. The team also had Creole lessons and learned about the history, culture and economy of Haiti, which is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
