Nursing professor, Patricia Thompson Leavitt, has been chosen as this year's Mary Rines Thompson Award winner by WCSH-6 and United Way of Portland for establishing a free health care center that has served more than 1,000 uninsured people over the last five years. Leavitt is a nursing professor at Saint Joseph's College and runs the Leavitt's Mill Free Health Center in Bar Mills.
WCSH-6 and United Way of Portland give out 6 Who Care awards every year to six individuals for their commitment to charitable work or public service. The recipient who receives the most votes by the judges is given the Mary Rines Thompson award for unselfish dedication to others.
Leavitt and the other awardees will be honored at an Oct. 19 banquet at the Portland Museum of Art, an event that will be televised on WCSH 6 on November 7, 8 p.m.
