April 24, 2006 Contact: Charmaine Daniels at (207) 893-7723 or e-mail cdaniels@sjcme.edu Learn about - and eat - sustainable seafood at Saint Joseph's College event featuring film on protecting oceans Enjoy delicious "sustainable" food along with learning how to eat healthy and protect the environment by coming to the Save Seafood Tour at Saint Joseph's College on Tuesday, May 2, at 7 p.m. The tour lets consumers know how to make sustainable seafood choices in the face of overfishing and environmental damage to the oceans. The presentation will feature a 30-minute film, Can the Oceans Keep Up With the Hunt?, as well as a talk about sustainability by Stuart Leckie, general manager of Bon Appétit food services at Saint Joseph's College. "We've found that consumers are eager to learn more, but don't know where to turn for information," says Leckie. The tour is a partnership between Bon Appétit and Seafood Watch, a program of the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium. Following a question-and-answer period, Bon Appétit will offer a reception with a variety of sustainable foods, including dessert (and served with biodegradable plates and cutlery). As the global population has increased and more people have become aware of fish as a healthy source of protein, worldwide seafood demand has increased dramatically and placed enormous stress on our oceans. Globally seafood is being harvested at an unsustainable rate using practices that severely damage the environment and compromise the quality of the seafood. Bon Appétit Management Company has used the Seafood Watch science-based standards to change its company-wide purchasing practices and to educate its workforce about sustainable seafood since 2002. The company is committed to socially responsible purchasing practices, and giving guests the information necessary to make informed food choices. The presentation will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Viola George Auditorium of Harold Alfond Hall on the Standish campus. The event is sponsored by the Environmental Awareness Committee, the Student Environmental Awareness Club and Bon Appétit Management Company. It is free and open to the public. Participants will be given an activist kit to spread the word about sustainable seafood. |
