marble     Paid Internship Opportunities!

Life is a journey. The irony is that much of it actually is spent driving a car...

ITNAmerica® (www.ITNAmerica.org) seeks energetic people who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of seniors. The Independent Transportation Network® (ITN®) works for the safety and dignity of older adults by helping them stay mobile and ultimately more independent! We currently have exciting paid college internship opportunities at our national headquarters and at our affiliate ITNPortland, both located in Westbrook, ME.

In the U.S. most seniors use private automobiles to get around. However, on average, men outlive their ability to drive by 6 years, women by 10 years. This year more than a million seniors from every socioeconomic level will turn in their keys. Because there are few alternatives to driving, many of these seniors will find themselves dependent on overburdened family members and friends, or worse, stranded in their homes. ITNAmerica is working to change that. ITNAmerica affiliates use cars to take seniors where they want to go, when they want to go.

The overarching goal of the internship position at ITNPortland is to help build the nonprofit’s capacity to become sustainable. Community outreach will be top priority in the pursuit of this goal. As an ITNPortland intern you can expect to recruit volunteers, give presentations to local businesses, plan annual fundraisers, write press releases, update the website and publish the quarterly newsletter, among other tasks. Interns at ITNAmerica will help build systems that support these crucial outreach activities at all of our affiliates from coast to coast. These are ideal positions for someone looking to gain experience in nonprofit management.

Qualifications:
- Must be a degree candidate at an accredited college or university
- Enthusiasm and a commitment to the ITN mission
- Excellent organizational and project management skills
Strong oral and written communication skills essential
- Strong computer skills and a willingness to learn new programs
- Leadership skills and the ability to work independently
- Fundraising or event planning experience a plus
-Marketing or communications experience a plus

These internships may be of particular interest to students in the following major fields:
Business Administration
Social Entrepreneurship
Public Policy or Public Health
Nonprofit Management
Communications or Public Relations
Marketing
Psychology
Social Work
Sociology
Gerontology

Internship positions are available immediately, both part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer.

Interested applicants should send a resume, with cover letter & transcripts to Jennifer.Demers@ITNAmerica.org
or call 207-591-6944 for more information.

marble     Funny. Smart. Irreverent. Skeptical. Oh yeah, and award-winning. Needless to say, this ain’t your father’s business paper. Mainebiz is a biweekly, statewide business paper that covers everything from the business of guitars to Maine’s booming building and real estate market. Of course, there’s also the occasional insurance or banking piece, too, but we pride ourselves on writing about those subjects in the same clear, informed (and occasionally sassy) tone in which we cover everything else.

You, as a Mainebiz intern, are no coffee-carrying lackey. Instead, you quickly become a part of our four-person staff, participating in editorial meetings, writing briefs, columns and -- if you’re good -- feature stories, proofreading and occasionally throwing a ball for Rocky and Zoey, our office dogs. We can’t offer you cash, but we can guarantee you’ll leave with a handful of clips and a head full of journalism know-how.

Want proof? Here’s what Caitlin Elsaesser, a 2004 graduate of Carleton College, wrote about her internship during the summer of 2003: “Mainebiz gave me the perfect window into the world of journalism. During the entire duration of my summer internship, I felt like I was a part of the staff: I was included in all decision making meetings and often asked for input. The staff at Mainebiz worked to accommodate my personal goals for the summer.”

What we want from you (there had to be a catch, right?) is a commitment of 15-20 hours a week for 10 weeks. If your college or university offers a one-month program, we can talk about that, too. Journalism majors are great, but we’re also happy to talk with other juniors and seniors with solid, demonstrable writing experience.

Interested? Check out www.mainebiz.biz, then email Taylor at tsmith@mainebiz.biz. We’ll look at your writing samples, set up an interview and see where it goes.

marble    Project Vote Smart, a political research organization started by former United States Presidents, Senators, and Congresspersons from both major political parties, is inviting 4 students from Saint Joseph's College to work and study at its unique Great Divide Research Center.

With all living expenses funded by the Hearst Foundation, this unique opportunity will place students at a high-tech research facility at the Project's exclusive Great Divide Ranch.  This extraordinary, private research center is located high in the Montana Rocky Mountains and is considered the most accurate, dependable source of political information on elected officials and candidates by news organizations nationwide.

The Program

The PVS National Internship is a unique opportunity to become involved in American politics. Students from across the nation, as well as international students seeking to learn more about the American political system, come to Philipsburg, Montana to help American citizens educate themselves about elected officials and candidates. By providing this information in an easy, accessible manner, Project Vote Smart believes that citizens can better defend themselves from the political hype and misrepresentation characteristic of present day political campaigns.

Interns play a crucial role at Project Vote Smart. In fact, interns and volunteers make up the vast majority of our staff. The individual talents, ideas and hard work of our interns have been instrumental in the success of many of our most important programs.

The work that is done in the office is not glamorous. Since we cover thousands of elected officials and candidates at various levels of depth, often times it is tedious and monotonous. However, if you are interested in making a genuine contribution to the improving of democracy while working in a positive, idealistic, grassroots environment we would love to have you join our team. The rewards for your efforts will be great. As internships go, there is plenty of room to learn and grow with the organization. A genuine effort is made to accommodate your professional and educational goals. In fact, interns and volunteers often return as staff members before moving on in their professional careers.

The Location

The Great Divide Ranch Retreat and Research Facility is located 30 minutes south of Philipsburg, Montana inside the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness. (two hours south of Missoula and 1 ½ hours west of Butte). We are three miles from the Continental Divide at 6,000 feet. One of the world's most famous fly-fishing rivers, Rock Creek, runs along one side of the property and Moose Lake borders the other. There are a myriad of outdoor activities available to students year-round. Whether it's hiking, fishing or riding our four horses in the summer or skiing, ice fishing or snowmobile in the winter, there is always something fun to do. There are also tennis, basketball and horseshoe facilities. The housing facilities consist of lodges divided into rooms that sleep between two and six. Students should expect to have at least two roommates. We have a full-time lodge manager living on the property who prepares all meals. As part of living in a group, students are required to help with weekly cleaning and maintenance chores assigned by the lodge manager.
