Family nursing, including maternity and pediatrics, is Ruth Smillie’s area of expertise and one of her main research areas. Ruth’s more than 30 years of nursing experience includes many different settings from float nursing and critical care to maternal newborn nursing. She was a critical care float nurse at Maine Medical Center, meaning that she works in different areas of the hospital depending on where she is needed, and presently works there as a maternal/newborn nurse.

Aside from family nursing, which she teaches at Saint Joseph’s College, in addition to clinical instruction, she is also interested in the orientation of new nursing graduates. Professor Smillie volunteers in the community. Her personal interests include her husband, her two children, and her two cats. She enjoys reading, boating, hiking, and cross-country skiing.
