Best course you didn't want to take but ended up liking?

Facilities Management with Steve Merrill. I was never really interested in management of sports facilities, however, we went on a few trips to different places and I found it was a very lucrative industry. I hope my internship with event staff this semester will give me more of an opportunity to develop more skills in facility management.

Does everybody know your name here or is that a myth?

I think it's the truth. People may not know you on a personal level, but it definitely is true that they at least know who you are. This is very true for me because I have such a distinct name and I am a minority.

Why did you come to St. Joe's?

Dr. Lee actually recruited me at an event. He started talking with my mother and I about St. Joe's and what they had to offer. My mom encouraged me to apply. When I got in, I went on a visit and really liked the campus.

What were a couple of your favorite courses and why?

Public relations with Lisa Ahearn. She made the class really interesting. I also found public relations an interesting field so the class kept me very engaged.

What do you hope to do for a career?

I'm going to grad school. I have been looking at a variety of universities across the country. After that I want to teach at either elementary or high school level. I have always wanted to teach because education is a strong value in life. Then hopefully I will work in my career field.

What do you like about your major? Why did you choose this major?

The sport/entertainment industry is huge. It has also been a major part of my life. I know that I will always have a job because people hold sports close to their hearts. There are so many opportunities and the jobs are constantly changing within that field.

Have you had any internships related to your major?

Yes, in the Alumni Office and for Event Staff. I worked in the Alumni office first semester. We did a lot of alumni relations work and planned events for the Class of 2011. I started my internship with the Event Staff this spring semester.

What's your favorite spot on campus?

The lake.

What have you learned here that you might have not guessed you would?

That I can adapt well to situations I wouldn't have normally found myself in. I'm a part of a minority so to not have that as a crutch, I've been able to adapt well to this lifestyle.

Favorite experience with faculty member?

Last semester I was a part of the Presidents Society and I spoke to the Board of Trustees and President Joe Lee. Joe came up to me and said that it was so special because of the fact that he recruited me.

In another favorite experience I was talking to Lisa about my schedule. I said to her "So I've never been to a fair before" and we laughed for ten minutes because I was just so candid with her. That's something I really value here at SJC is the ability to be candid with faculty.

Did you always know you wanted to be in sports management?

At first I wanted to be an astronaut. But I've always known I wanted to teach. I've known for such a long time that I wanted to do something in the sports industry. I wasn't going to let that dream go away.

What kinds of extracurricular activities have you done: clubs, sports, intramurals, etc.?

I work a lot. I work in the café, and as event staff. I'm an RA (resident advisor), and I'm the president of Interhall Council.

Field trips/out-of-classroom experiences for academics or service learning or just plain service?

My freshman year I volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House cooking breakfast. As an RA we made dinners for the people at Catherine's Cupboard Food Pantry.
