Bachelor of Science in Physical Education Teacher Preparation

The Physical Education/Teacher Preparation (PETE) program at Saint Joseph’s College provides the necessary information and physical skills to prepare candidates to enter their field as career-focused, market savvy leaders in physical education.

Upon completing the degree, PETE majors are ready to succeed in advanced studies in many different educational settings, including middle schools and high schools, fitness centers, the world of physical and occupational therapy.

Hands-on experience, both in the classroom and off-site at other venues, is the foundation for the physical education program, giving students the tools they need to become influential teachers, trainers, and role models in the community. With a unique focus on sports and physical skills, the program encourages teaching practices that transcend cultural, social, and economic status.

The physical education major is a State of Maine approved program that is comprised of liberal studies, education methodology, and a continuum of field experiences. One semester of student teaching is required for teacher certification, but not for graduation. Students are required to provide their own transportation to all education placements (although carpooling can be arranged). Please note, a grade of “C” or above is required for all education courses. A student receiving a grade below “C” will be required to retake the course. Additionally, all methods courses must be completed prior to student teaching.
