Iceland trip by Prof. Jim Reynolds of Brevard College, NCGeology in Iceland

    A 100- and 200-level field-based Geology Course
    June 12 – July 3, 2017

Professor Johan Erikson leads a three-week expeditionary field geology course in Iceland that will feature active volcanoes, glaciers, thermal geysers, columnar basalts, lava flows, tectonic plates, glacial ice caps, midocean ridge,  waterfalls, and fjords. According to Erikson, “There’s only so much you can learn about environmental science or geoscience in the classroom. Practicing science in the field improves the quality of their education and helps our economy by building a cohort of young scientists who are eager to go into STEM fields and solve real world problems.”

Iceland is our classroom. See it by van and day hikes. Spend 22 days tenting at campgrounds, many with geothermal hot springs. This 4-credit course is open to both science and non-science majors.

For more information, contact Professor Erikson at or 104 Mercy Hall.

    Environmental Science Semester

Science students on Environmental Science Semester

The Environmental Science Semester (ESS) is a rigorous, ten-week scientific expedition with Saint Joseph’s College, one of the few programs in the country designed to immerse students full time in the practice of field science for an entire semester. Part of the Environmental & Marine Sciences majors, the Environmental Science Semester delivers a full load of four environmental and geoscience courses, studying such diverse topics as Climate Change and Glacial Geology, Marine Ecology, Oceanography, and Field Methods. The entire program is conducted off-campus between mid-August and late October in locations ranging from Fundy National Park in New Brunswick, Canada to the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the coast of Maine aboard a 72’ schooner.
