What is instructional design?

According to the Association for Talent Development (ATD), instructional design:

...also known as instructional system design (ISD), is the creation of learning experiences and materials in a manner that results in the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills. The discipline follows a system of assessing needs, designing a process, developing materials and evaluating their effectiveness.

How can an instructional designer help me?

An instructional designer can help you:

  • ensure assessments are in alignment with lesson and course-level outcomes;
  • increase clarity and/or specificity (e.g., instructions, rubric criteria/levels);
  • identify and eliminate issues related to copyright;
  • complement text and/or presentations with visuals;
  • prioritize accessibility by employing universal design for learning (UDL);
  • create assessments that are varied and meet the needs of all learners;
  • develop clear, assignment-specific rubrics;
  • generate interactive components such as games, simulations, and practice activities;
  • curate relevant, professionally-developed media; and
  • translate text into dynamic and engaging multimedia content.
