Kicking off the 2014–2015 academic year, the Cultural Affairs Committee is proud to announce the lineup for their fall Lecture series.
The Series begins on Friday, September 12, when Maurice Fitzpatrick visits campus for a 3 p.m. screening and discussion on his 2013 documentary, Translations Revisited, which chronicles the creation of Brian Friel’s play Translations. Written in 1980, Translations was considered a cultural experiment that sought to translate the terms of Ireland’s political debate that lasted for more than 30 years, beginning in the 1960s.
Maurice Fitzpatrick was born in Ireland and attended Trinity College Dublin. He wrote and co-produced The Boys of St. Columb's, an RTE/BBC documentary film. He is also the author of the book The Boys of St. Columb's, which was described as “an indispensable document” by The Irish Times.
The Lecture Series continues throughout the fall semester:
—October 16, 6:30 p.m., “The Spiritual Practice of Mindfulness,” with Dr. Marilyn Sunderman, RSM
—November 5, 6:30 p.m., “A Circuitous Route from Maine to Venezuela and Beyond,” with Dr. Max Brant from Semester at Sea
—November 17, 7 p.m., “Mastering the Mockingjay,” a panel discussion on The Hunger Games with SJC faculty
All events take place in the Viola George Auditorium, Harold Alfond Hall, at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish. The events are free to attend and are open to the community.
