Dr. Angela Gleason presents “Living in the Margins: Early Irish Scribes & Their Manuscripts,” a look into how early Irish scribes, who copied the biblical and classical manuscripts that led Thomas Cahill
to claim the Irish “saved civilization,” also wrote personal comments in the margins of their work. The lecture will examine these “scribblings” as a means to understand the authors’ lives and their deepest thoughts. In addition to being part of the Cultural Affairs Committee’s 2016 spring lecture series, this lecture has the distinction of serving as the third annual Karen Lemke Memorial Lecture, a tradition started in 2014 to honor the memory of Dr. Karen Lemke, a long-time faculty member in the Department of Education at St. Joseph’s.
