Authorized Provider of the American Red Cross
Wilderness Emergencies is a companion workshop and American Red Cross Wilderness & Remote First Aid course integrated into a single program about broken thinking, broken conditions, and broken people in wilderness and remote settings. The program provides critical knowledge, decision-making, and skills whether you are a hiker, mountain biker, back-country skier, or paddler. Workshop content includes risk & accidents, thermal state, weather conditions, water and ice issues, sanitation, encounters with the locals, getting turned about, getting stuck overnight and more. The Red Cross course portion includes working 18 skills and multiple scenarios covering patient assessment, emergency moves, shock, cardiac and chest emergencies, head/neck/back injuries, soft tissue injuries, bone & joint injuries, and environmental issues.
Due to the self-contained Red Cross certification component in Wilderness First Aid, a current (within two years from the start-date of the course) Red Cross or Heart Association certification that includes Adult CPR is required. A separate Adult CPR course, using combined on-line and classroom learning, is available prior to the Wilderness Emergencies program.
Topics included, but not limited to:
- primary and secondary assessments
- calling for help and evacuation considerations
- wounds and wound infection
- bone and joint injuries
- heat-related illnesses
- altitude illnesses
- submersion incidents
- allergies and anaphylaxis
Participants will receive a handbook and a Wilderness and Remote First Aid certification valid for two years. Participants must be at least 14 years old on or before the last session of the course.
