The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress.

  • Front Crawl – 25 yards
  • Back Crawl – 25 yards
  • Breaststroke – 25 yards
  • Elementary Backstroke – 25 yards
  • Sidestroke – 25 yards
  • Butterfly – 15 yards
  • Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
  • Tread water for 1 minute

What is the WSI Course?

The Water Safety Instructor certification course trains WSI candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants progress.

How long is WSI certification good for?

Once certified, WSI instructors are certified for two years. To keep certification current you must teach and record a course within that two year period.

How do you become WSI certified?

  1. You must be 16 before or on the last day of classes
  2. Complete the online orientation to the Swimming & Water Safety Program
  3. Complete the online Water Safety Instructor course
  4. Attend all class sessions.
  5. Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  6. Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the final written exam.

How much does WSI certification cost?

Course Cost: An additional $35 is required to be paid to the American Red Cross for certification cost when you register with them for the online portion of the class. Your books are included in the course cost.

What do I bring to class?

  • Class forms (printed copies)
  • Water Safety Instructor online course completion report (printed or photo proof)
  • Proof of completion of the Orientation to the Swimming & Water Safety Program (printed or photo proof)
  • Bathing suit, goggles, towel and a dry change of clothes
  • A pen or pencil and paper for notes
  • 3” 3 ring binder for one of your books for your course book and paperwork

WSI Class refund and cancellation policy

If you cancel your class within 72 hours of the first class, you will be charged a $75 cancellation fee and the $35 non-refundable online enrollment fee.

If you cancel within 12 hours of the start of the class or don't show, you will not be refunded.
