The Maine Space Grant Consortium (MSGC), an affiliate-based nonprofit funded by NASA’s National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program, has awarded funding to two Saint Joseph’s College natural science instructors, Associate Professor Johan Erikson and Assistant Professor Emily Lesher, for development of the new course Research Science on Sebago Lake (ES107).
This introductory course is intended for first- and second-year science students. The students will develop a robust and complete research project while focusing on the cycling of carbon in and around Sebago Lake. “It is designed to enable students to carry out a research project from conception to presentation,” says Erikson.
Erikson and Lesher say this course will strengthen the connection between the science foundation courses and research for Saint Joseph’s science students, who otherwise typically wait until junior or senior year to engage in research. “It is a way to get students involved in research as soon as they begin, which will add relevance to all of their other science courses,” says Erikson.
The course will first be offered in the 2015 fall semester.
