- Since Saint Joseph’s College started, more than 17,000 people have earned undergraduate and graduate degrees through on-campus and distance education programs.
- The top 10 states where the most Saint Joseph’s alumni live are (in descending order): Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Florida, New York, New Hampshire, Ohio, New Jersey, North Carolina and Texas.
- The Sisters of Mercy supported the college financially in the early decades by donating their salaries and even kicking in extra funds when times were tough and payroll needed to be met. Only when the college could stand on its own did they ask to receive their salaries.
- Since intercollegiate sports began in 1970, the number of varsity teams has grown to 19. The latest varsity sport to be launched is track and field, beginning this fall with both men’s and women’s teams.
- Five Sisters of Mercy served as president of the college, and 66 Sisters have served as faculty and staff, including professors, librarians, fundraisers, nurses, treasurers, campus ministers, kitchen managers, housemothers, and switchboard operators.
- Saint Joseph’s College employs more than 560 people on a full and part-time basis and has a direct economic impact of $31 million on Maine’s economy (according to a 2008 economic impact study conducted by Planning Decisions, Inc.).
- In 1949, the name of the college was changed to The College of Our Lady of Mercy, but with the change of site to Standish in 1956, the original name of Saint Joseph’s College was resumed.
- When the college first bought the Verrill Estate for its expansion to Standish, it purchased 115 acres. It now owns 360, including acreage across the road from the main entrance.
- During the most recent spring semester, our service learning program served 38 community partners in the area and involved nearly 400 students in 40 different courses.
