On September 18, 2017, Saint Joseph’s College celebrated the completion of the first phase of a new athletics complex. The facility includes an artificial turf-surfaced and lighted field, an eight-lane track, and on-site parking. Members of the Board of Trustees, President James Dlugos and the Leadership Team, donors, parents, alumni, coaches, students, and staff all gathered for the ceremony which featured a field blessing by Sister Joyce Mahany and brief speeches from President Dlugos and Brian Curtin, the Monks’ Director of Athletics.

The $200,000 Light the Way Challenge was proposed by the Putnam family as a kick-off to generate enthusiasm for the $5 million project. Donors raised $214,000 in honor of Saint Joseph’s College student-life and student-athlete advocate Dick Bailey, former Dean of Students and currently Co-Head Softball Coach. This marks an historic moment for the Monks. We are grateful to all of our supporters who helped surpass the Putnam family challenge and raised a total of $428,000 to Light the Way.

A Blessing Upon the Fields

Sr. Mahany blessing turf fieldSister Joyce Mahany, RSM blessed the field at the Grand Opening ceremony:

“We are here today to ask God’s blessings on this field and on all who will play here. First let us give thanks for the wonder and beauty God provides: good days when the sun shines warmly; the foliage that embraces the field; all of us who are here for this dedication, especially you who have given so generously of your time, talent, and treasure. May our athletes always show their gratitude through good sportsmanship, through fair play, through a desire to be successful on the playing field and in life.  May they learn to be good team players, learn good use of their time, and learn always to do the best for a greater good...As I sprinkle this Holy Water on a very small part of these grounds, may its spiritual blessing go throughout this entire athletic park and bless all that happens here today and in the future. Amen.”

First Win on Turf — Monks Celebrate New Athletics Complex

Following the ceremony on September 18, 2017 to open the new lighted turf field and eight-lane track, the Saint Joseph’s College Women’s Soccer Team raced past the University of Southern Maine, collecting a 5-0 win at the new Saint Joseph’s College Athletics Complex. Haley DaGraca ’19 netted a hat trick, while Emily DeLuca ’18 and Brenna Smith ’21 each added a goal. The winning margin of five goals is the largest ever recorded by the College in the 29-game series with the Huskies.

Collectively, the Monks field hockey and men’s and women’s soccer teams finished out their first season on the new turf with an incredible 24-2-2 record while outscoring their opponents by an astounding 84-10 composite score in 28 contests at the SJC Athletics Complex.
