Did an internship lead to your current job or your first job out of college?
Yes, my internship did lead me to my current job and my first job out of college. I interned with the Portland Sea Dogs during the 2010 season, and while I was interning with the Maine Red Claws for the 2010-2011 season, the Portland Sea Dogs contacted me about a job opening.
Why or what do you love about St. Joe’s?
I liked that I was able to make strong connections with professors who helped me get to where I am today. I also liked the close-knit relationships on my field hockey team.
What are you doing now for work?
I am the Sales Director of Tickets with the Portland Sea Dogs, a minor league baseball team in Portland, Maine. Although I work primarily in the ticket office as one of the season ticket holder liaisons and supervisors, I also make outgoing sales calls to potential sponsorship and advertising clients.
What helped you land the job you have?
Networking and making connections helped me land the job I have now. Through my two internships, I met a ton of people and was able to create many valuable relationships that I still have to this day.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I can’t emphasize enough the importance of getting out into the workforce, creating those relationships, and getting your name out there. I started by contacting professors who I knew would help point me in the right direction. I can’t thank them enough for all the help they gave me, from repeatedly looking over my resume to sitting down with me and giving me “real life” advice.
The path I took wasn’t always glorious, but the hours of dedication I put in got me where I am today. I can’t begin to count the amount of hours I’ve worked in minor league sports since 2010, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s not easy to get a job in the sports industry, especially with such a well renowned organization as the Portland Sea Dogs. As a 22-year-old recent graduate, I am so fortunate to be where I am in life.
You have worked with a sports marketing class here on campus on a special project that gets students involved in a real-world marketing effort. Can you tell us about that project?
I was able to get St. Joe’s and two other colleges to participate in a contest to sell the largest number of Sea Dog tickets to other students at their college for a game during the spring semester. Students are in charge of developing creative ideas to sell tickets. It will provide students an opportunity to use skills learned in their Introduction to Marketing classes and relate them to the sport industry. The Portland Sea Dogs created this event to give students the opportunity to experience the work that goes in to creating and putting forth a marketing campaign.
