A guide to help you choose the correct class for your child’s ability level.
Please read the descriptions carefully in order to select the right class for your child and for your schedule! A $5 administrative fee will be assessed if a class is changed at any point after registration. If you are unsure which level your child should be in, please call the Aquatics Office at 207-893-6669 for an evaluation or to set up a screening.
Parent/ChildProgram (Ages 6 Months – 4 Years Old)
Please note, this course requires one parent to be in the water with their child.
- This course is designed to familiarize young children with the water and prepare them to learn to swim in the American Red Cross Preschool Aquatics or Learn-to-Swim courses. It is not intended to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the wateron their own.
Pre-schoolPrograms (4 – 5 Years Old)
Please note, these programs do not ask for parents to be in the water with their child.
Pre-School Level 2
- A beginner class, children will experiment with blowing bubbles, putting their face in the water, and moving their arms and legs so as to move across the water on their front and back, as well as discuss on how to be safe in and around the pool. *All Preschool Aquatics skills are performed with assistance.”
Pre-School Level 3
- This class is for children who are comfortable in the water and are able to do the “doggie paddle” using a noodle. Children will explore retrieving objects under water, floating on their front and back, safe diving, and getting their arms out of the water when they swim. *All Preschool Aquatics skills are performed with assistance.
YouthPrograms (Ages 6 & Up)
Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills
- Orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water.
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
- The object of Level 2 is to give students success with fundamental skills. Children learn how to float without support and recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills through exploration of simultaneous or alternating arm and leg actions while on the front and back. This is laying the foundation for future strokes.
Level 3: Stroke Development
- The object of this level is to build on the skills learned in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice. Students learn how to better coordinate their front and back crawl, as well as learn elements of the butterfly stroke and the fundamentals of treading water. As in all levels, additional safety skills are presented. Swimmers need to know how to “bob”, swim on their front and back before entering Level 3.
Level 4: Stroke Improvement
- Participants entering level 4 must be able to demonstrate all the skill requirements of Level 3. In this level, participants improve skills and increase endurance performing the front and back crawl, will build on the elementary back stroke, are introduced to the breaststroke and side stroke. Basics of turning at the wall are introduced along with the fundamentals of diving.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement
- Coordination and refinement are the objective at this level. Participants refine performance in all strokes (front and back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke). Flip turns on the front and back are also introduced.
Level 6: Swimming & Skill Proficiency
- Swimming with more ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances are the goals of Level 6. Level 6 has “menu” options (personal water safety, fitness swimming, and lifeguard readiness) that each focus on preparing students to participate in more advanced courses such as Water Safety Instructor Training, Lifeguard Training, and other aquatic activities such as competitive swimming.
Adult Swim Lessons (By Appointment)
Instruction is beginner, intermediate, or advanced skills. Call for availability.
