Members of the Saint Joseph’s College Nursing Department attended Nurses Day at the Maine State House’s Hall of Flags in order to meet and network with Maine legislators. The event also allowed the display of student research posters and the opportunity to observe legislative committees at work. Faculty member Suzanne Parkman said, “We met with legislators to educate them on the importance of Medicaid Services expansion in Maine and positive patient outcomes.
Student posters presented the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) Nursing Quality Indicators: Fall prevention (students: Angela Valenti, Emily Thornton, Austin Corrieri), Central-line associated blood stream infection prevention (students: Chelsey Reynolds, Kylie Peacock, Julia Rowlett, Jahnique Registe), and pressure ulcer prevention (students: Arianna Kahler, Kylie Hawes, Nick Belliveau, Dimitra Katsigiannis).
Parkman said, “The fall prevention poster, in particular, resonated with a few legislators who had had their own parent fall. They shared the experience that their parent was never discharged home after the fall or passed away as a result of the fall. They felt that fall prevention was an incredibly important topic and appreciated the evidence the students presented.”
The American Nurses Association-Maine presented Senator Brownie Carson with “An Act to Restore Public Health Nursing Services” award.
