Ashton Piers from Portland, Maine, is graduating with a Master of Science in Nursing degree with a Family Nurse Practitioner specialization. She completed her coursework in April and has recently passed her FNP boards. She is a member of the Honor Society of Nursing and has been a part of the Saint Joseph's College community since she began in the undergraduate nursing program in 2005. Ashton earned her BSN from Saint Joseph’s College in 2010.
Before graduating with her Bachelor’s in Nursing, Ashton already had a job as a cardiac nurse at Mercy Hospital. She continued to work there for the next three years and focused on developing her nursing skills and becoming a leader on the unit. After a year and a half, Ashton was already a resource nurse and was promoted to a professional nurse there. Also, while at Mercy Hospital, Ashton helped develop a volunteer healing touch program for patients before going into Surgery. In 2012, Ashton was nominated as a Shining Star for her volunteer work.
While advancing her career as a nurse, Ashton also stayed an active member of Saint Joseph’s College as the assistant coach for the swim team. She continued to coach for five years and was a part of many of the team’s accomplishments including the Sportsmanship Award at the New England Championship Meet in 2012.
Ashton has clinical experience in a variety of areas including cardiac and obstetrics. She used that experience to assist her in her role of clinical adjunct faculty as she finished her graduate work. She was also a member of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nursing and a supporter of the March of Dimes program. Ashton’s commitment to Saint Joseph's College has never faltered and she continues her service as full time faculty in the nursing program. She also plans to use her master’s degree as a provider in a family practice office.
