(STANDISH, ME) - This spring, two unique events are coming to the Saint Joseph’s College campus. The first of these is "Researching My Heritage: Navajo Archaeology and the Old Leupp Boarding School" a lecture by Davina Two Bears. Davina’s PhD dissertation topic derives from her grandparents’ oral history about the school on the southwestern Navajo Reservation in Leupp, Arizona. Using non-destructive indigenous research methods, including interviews with Navajo elders and archival records and historic photographs, her decolonizing research investigates the early history of the boarding school, which has never been thoroughly documented before. She focuses on the educational experience of Navajo children at the OLBS, and how they resisted and survived early 20th century federal Indian Boarding School assimilationist policies. This lecture will be held in the Viola George Auditorium on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 from 3:00-4:00 PM.davina two bears 1

Later in April, Saint Joseph’s College will host a special screening of the documentary One Team: The Lewiston High School Blue Devils. One Team tells the story of the Lewiston High School Blue Devils boys soccer team and their remarkable path to the school’s first ever state championship title. After losing in the championship game just one year prior, this high school team, comprised of a diverse group of players representing six different countries, sets out to do what no other Lewiston High School soccer team could accomplish. Overcoming cultural obstacles, the boys are united by a coach determined, to not only win, but bring his team together and provide their community with a new sense of identity and hope. With race, religion, and politics aside, this extraordinary group of young men demonstrates to the world how the sport of soccer transcends all borders. This film screening will be held in the Viola George Auditorium on Monday, April 8, 2019 at 3:00 PM. The documentary producer, Tom Deschenes, and Coach Mike McGraw will be in attendance for a Q & A following the film. For more information about this event, please contact Mike Connolly at 893-7939.
