Public Invited to Sebago Lake Symposium on February 2, 2019
Hosted by the Portland Water District and the Center for Sustainable Communities at Saint Joseph's College, the Sebago Lake Symposium on February 2, 2019 offers an opportunity for Sebago Lake community members and scientists to interactively and collaboratively share and grow their understanding of Sebago Lake, a freshwater lake that provides water for 15% of Maine's population. Topics covered by speakers and sessions include: health of Sebago Lake fisheries, Sebago Lake water quality, climate change impacts, the Sebago Lake monitoring buoy, algae and invasive plants, citizen science opportunities, beach closures, and policies for lake protection. Free, but registration required.
Princeton Review Names Saint Joseph's College of Maine as a "Green College" for its Sustainability Initiatives
Saint Joseph’s College has been recognized for its environmental responsibility by The Princeton Review. The education services company known for its test prep and tutoring services, books, and college rankings features Saint Joseph’s College in the 2018 edition of its book, The Princeton Review’s Guide to 399 Green Colleges.
22 SJC Nursing Students Inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society
The Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society held their 31st Annual Induction Ceremony in October on the University of Southern Maine (USM) campus and inducted 22 nurses from Saint Joseph's College of Maine, as well as from Maine Medical Center, University of New England, and USM.
Saint Joseph’s College of Maine nursing students achieve highest NCLEX pass rate in the state among BSN programs
The Saint Joseph’s College of Maine nursing program has achieved the highest pass rate of licensing exams for students in a BSN nursing program in the State of Maine. For calendar year 2018, SJC nursing graduates achieved a 100 percent pass rate of NCLEX, the National Council Licensure Examination. This SJC pass rate surpassed the national average of 89.41 percent and the Maine state average of 89 percent.
Catherine’s Cupboard Refocuses Efforts on Regional Food Pantry Approach, Ceases Pantry at Standish Municipal Center
Catherine’s Cupboard will operate its weekly food pantry operations out of the Standish Municipal Center until December 19, 2018. Following that date, Catherine’s Cupboard will take the next step forward in its longstanding commitment to supporting sustainable communities and combating food insecurity by investing its dedicated financial resources and volunteerism in other local pantries. Following statewide and regional recommendations, this change seeks to increase the effectiveness–through greater collaboration–in the hunger relief food distribution system.
Saint Joseph’s College To Host New England Food System Innovation Challenge
As part of the effort to contribute solutions to the challenges facing New England’s food system, Saint Joseph’s College will host the 2018 New England Food System Innovation Challenge beginning on Friday, November 9, 2018 and concluding on Sunday, November 11, 2018.

College Leadership
Saint Joseph's College of Maine is a private, liberal arts college led by a board of trustees, a president, and a leadership team.
President Joseph Cassidy, J.D.
Joseph L. Cassidy, JD is the 15th President of Saint Joseph’s College of Maine. He has been involved in education for over 30 years, serving students as a grade school teacher, high school teacher, college professor, and for the last 10 years as a college President in the Maine Community College System. He joined Saint Joseph’s in 2023 following six successful years as President of SMCC, Maine’s largest community college with over 6,200 students. He was previously president of Washington County Community College (WCCC) for five years.
While at SMCC, Cassidy implemented a strategic planning process that engaged all facets of the community - faculty, administration, staff, and students - and led to whole college reform. His “pathways” approach has led to new procedures and advising structures throughout the college, all designed to remove barriers to student success. He also expanded opportunities for success beyond SMCC with the creation of new and more robust articulation agreements with colleges throughout Maine and New England.
In addition to serving as president at SMCC and WCCC, Cassidy simultaneously served as interim president at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor for the 2015-16 academic year. Cassidy began his career at WCCC as a faculty member. He once served as president of the WCCC Faculty Association and as mayor of the City of Calais.
College History
From the time the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Portland, Maine in 1873, they dreamed of applying the educational goals of Sister Catherine McAuley, who founded their order in Dublin, Ireland in 1831. After working toward this goal, the Portland Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas founded Saint Joseph’s College in 1912 on the grounds of the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse in the Deering district of Portland. It was chartered by the Maine Legislature in 1915. In 1949, the name of the College was changed, briefly, from Saint Joseph’s College to The College of Our Lady of Mercy. When the Sisters purchased the Verrill Estate and moved the College to Standish in 1956, they reinstated the original name of Saint Joseph’s. Less than fifteen years later, in 1970, Saint Joseph’s became a co-educational institution. Then, in 1976, the College became a pioneer in distance education programs.
With more than a century of history, Saint Joseph’s College remains as Maine’s Catholic, liberal arts college, situated on the 474-acre campus on the shore of Sebago Lake in Standish, Maine, where students and staff enjoy views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. The College offers undergraduate and graduate degrees for men and women of all faiths and ages through campus and online educational programming.
