U.S. Department of Justice Grant Funds Prevention of Violence Educational Programming at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine

The United States Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office on Violence Against Women awarded Saint Joseph’s College of Maine a three-year, $299,884 grant to fund programming that enhances prevention of, awareness of, and response to a range of sexual misconduct that can occur in a college community, including: sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, or stalking. This is one of 57 grants totaling over $18 million to higher education institutions nationwide. With the new funding, the entire College community will experience training, in partnership with Through These Doors and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, and facilitated by Coordinator for Violence Prevention Sarah Gordon who started her new position last week. This DOJ grant is designed to support community coordination, strategic planning, and competency-based education around all issues of violence on a college campus.

Saint Joseph’s College of Maine Welcomes SilverSneakers® into Community

The Alfond Center at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine is expanding its adult fitness classes to include the nationally recognized SilverSneakers® program. SilverSneakers–the nation’s leading community fitness program designed exclusively for older adults– offers a way to motivate older adults to increase their levels of physical activity and remain socially active. The College will celebrate a SilverSneakers Launch Week on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, March 12, 14, and 15, 2019. On those three days during Launch Week, classes will be free and door prizes will be awarded.

Connolly, a professor of History and Political Science at Saint Joseph’s College, will present on three different aspects of John Ford’s life and filmography during a state-wide film festival in February. The Maine Film Center is bringing together various independent cinemas and educational organizations to celebrate what would have been the 125th birthday of John Ford, one of America’s most acclaimed filmmakers.
